G.I. Joe is not a person, it’s an elite military group. You don’t apply to be part of the group, they ask you if they think you are fit for the task.
Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) are part of a NATO troop that have a mission to deliver warheads to NATO. The warheads contain a new weapon based on nanotechnology. Each one of the warheads have the capability to destroy an entire city. The company behind the technology is MARS, lead by weapons expert James McCullen (Christopher Eccleston). James has his own plans for the warheads, and that does not include letting them get to their destination.
The NATO troop is ambushed by The Baroness (Sienna Miller) during a mission. As the fight goes on, Duke recognizes the Baroness to be his ex-fiancee Ana. They are both a bit surprised to be meeting in such a manor. A team of G.I. Joes comes to the rescue, and the bad guys are fight of, for now.
The leader of the G.I. Joe group says he’ll take care of the delivery from there on. Duke and Ripcords refuses to hand over the warheads, it is their mission. They all go back to G.I. Joe’s headquarters, where they contact McCullen at MARS companies. McCullen remotely examines the warheads to see if they are still intact.
The secret location of G.I. Joe’s headquarters is compromised due to a transmitter being reactivated on the case containing the warheads. The bad guys attacks and manage to escape with the warheads.
The battle has begun.
G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra is based on a toy franchise (G.I. Joe), and the comic book G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. I have not read the comic book, nor am I familiar with the toys, but I think it’s safe to assume that all important characters are represented in the movie.
It’s a very action filled movie, not so realistic though. There’s some rather funny moments as well. You’ll probably end up laughing a lot over Duke’s and Ripcord’s attempts to master their transportation, sort of a armour that makes them run faster, jump higher and such things.
There’s a lot of car chasing, a lot of firepower and a few special gadgets. Of course there’s the regular man to man fights as well. During the fights they destroy a lot of things, some with just minor crashes, others with a big bang and explosions.
Over all a good movie, worth spending a bit time and money watching. Perhaps not the kind of movie I’d buy, but it wouldn’t be a total waste of money to do so.
